Smithsonian’s NMAI features Mockups art toy

On Saturday, December 8 guest artist from around the country converged on the National Museum of the American Indian’s grand Potomic room for Design Yourself: IAMNMAI,” an event featuring Louie Gong (Nooksack/Chinese/Scottish/French), a Seattle-based educator and artist, and his newly-released customizable art toy dubbed “Mockups.”

Guest artists Lee Newman, Chris Pappan, Lisa Schumaier, and Debra Yepa-Pappan and about 150 visitors joined him for an interactive evening of creativity, music, and celebration.

A unique display of artwork, including Gong’s famed custom shoes and “Mockups” created by guest artists, remained on view in the Potomac Atrium for two weeks.

The artistic partnership was designed to explore issues of identity, community, and mixed heritage through art while reminding us that everyone, in their own way, is part of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). (See slideshow below)
